It is going to be one of the most exhilarating and extravagant purchases of your life. But through all the excitement, there is a distinct undercurrent of stress when it comes to selecting a wedding dress.
Buying a wedding dress is something just about every woman has at one point or another imagined doing, and when the time comes there are so many choices, so many shops, so little time.
Before you end up in a frustrated flurry of emotions, read our top tips of practical expert advice for choosing a wedding dress.
- Give yourself time
9 months should be the ideal amount of time to spend searching the boutiques for your wedding gown. Not only will you have enough time to settle on an idea and try on all of the possible options, but it will also allow room for alterations and adjustments.
- Browse the boutiques
No two bridal gown boutiques are the same. Some might cater only to brides of a certain size, while others simply won’t have the kind of quality you are expecting. Look online, ask for suggestions on social media, and then hit the boutiques which match your expectations.
- Try on 4 to 7 dresses
The biggest challenge is trying on the dresses. To avoid confusion (and to avoid falling in love with all of them!), try to stick to no more than 7 dresses. It also helps to make a list of the styles you’d like to try on and listen to the assistants, they’ve seen it all when it comes to bridal gowns and which styles suit which brides best. They might even suggest a style you didn’t think of.
- Move around
It is tempting to stand in front of that elaborate floor length mirror and simply indulge in this special moment. But on the day of your wedding, you’ll be moving around and sitting down. Don’t be stationary when trying on your gown, move. It is the only way to find out how the material looks in motion, and it’ll give you an idea about how comfortable you’ll be on the day.
- Be true to you
Everyone in your entourage is going to have their own ideas about what style suits you. But no one knows you better than you know yourself. Select a dress that you like, in a style that you are most comfortable in. Don’t just look at the dress; picture yourself walking towards your partner in that dress, and then decide if that dress is the one for you.
